Many homes built in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s have second growth cedar siding which contain knots that may become partially detached from the surrounding structure. This allows moisture to intrude into the surrounding wood fibers and will soon start to rot. This process happens over time when the siding has not been properly sealed and coated. After a detailed preparation process to remove the loosely adhered coatings, all knots are then encapsulated and sealed with a lifetime rated elastomeric sealant. The end result is a well protected surface. When painting this grade of cedar siding, make sure to work the paint into the surface with a brush. A good stiff bristle brush will help ensure proper coverage into the cracks that spray application will not get to.
Another problematic siding product that was used in the 90′s is a particle board product manufactured by LP that swells with moisture and then grows mold. If you have LP siding and it has not been replaced and you would like to try and save it, we can re-seal the bottom edge to prevent it from further intrusion and swelling. The photos below show the problem and the fix.
