Choosing the right Seattle painter

How to choose the right Seattle painter:

If you are seeking a painter for a project it is important to carefully consider the qualifications of the house painter and the reputation he or she has gained over the years in the area served.

Having a contractor license is required by the state of Washington and is usually a given that the Seattle painter you are evaluating will have one you can check here to make sure:  http://lni.wa.gov/

When it comes to checking references there are a few things to keep in mind.  Most contractors are not going to give you names and emails of customers they have had issues with.  Also many of their past happy customers are simply too busy to call or email back everyone who asks about references.  This is why I recommend using online reference checking.  A few good sources are http://yelp.com/ http://angieslist.com http://bbb.org and of course http://google.com having a few positive reviews online will give you at least some assurance that you are dealing with a professional.

How long they have been in business is another thing to consider.  1 year is not enough time to know enough about how to operate a successful house painting business and 20 years may be too long for them to truly care about your reviews as a customer.  It is also a big plus if the owner of the business will be on the job working with the crew.  This will help with communication of any issues as the job progresses.

Although it may be tempting to go with the lowest bid when evaluating the estimates, it is usually not a wise decision to go this route.  Often times the low bidder is not accounting for enough time to complete the paint job correctly.  If the low bidder realizes that his estimated time is running out he will often start cutting preparation steps and often these steps will be noticed not to long after the final payment check has cleared.

If you would like a general idea of how much your painting project may cost it is O.K to ask about a ballpark figure over the phone for small projects.  Larger projects will need to be cost estimates on site.

When evaluating estimates look for the one with the most detail.  The more detail and costs breakdowns the better.  This will give you a clear understanding of why the price came in where it did and help you to get an understanding of the work and steps involved in the entire house painting process.

Often times we are recommended by our customer’s family, friends and neighbors. Referrals are a great way to find a Seattle painter. Another area of consideration for knowing a quality contractor from a fly by nighter is to look for the professional affiliations they are associated with.  http://mba-ks.com/ and  http://pdca.org are great organizations to be a part of and will show a level of professionalism from your contractor. I will also occasionally get call the paint store I use giving me a referral.  Some of my customers have simply walked into the local paint store (not the big boxes)  of a paint company they trust and ask about local painters in the Seattle area. Another thing to keep in mind is that not all painters are suited for all types of painting projects.  Some companies will only do exterior new construction and would not be a good choice for restoration of old .  Some will only brush and roll while others spray.

If you know that you are going to be particular about the quality of the finished product and see some example photos of the contractors work that are detailed and representative of results you would expect, you will have additional reassurance of what you can expect. It is also perfectly acceptable and advisable to ask specific questions about type of products used and why they use them, how the painters get desirable results, and basically how they do what they do and why they do it that way.  A good Seattle painter will have in depth knowledge of the exact procedures needed to produce beautiful results. An example of this is asking about the paint removal process they use.  I use a heating method that pulls the old paint coatings off the wood and leaves the wood dry and clean and ready for a prime soaker coat.  I could write a small book on this entire process but engaging in a detailed conversation will help you rest assured you have made the right decisions.

Exterior House Painting Colors

A quality exterior house painting job should not be rushed.

Getting it right the first time will require some thought and consideration. House painting can be a much more labor intensive task than most people realize and can be expensive to contract out. Therefore any decision you make has to be well thought out and researched to ensure the best possible outcome and a long lasting paint job.  Hiring the right Seattle House Painters will help you feel at ease during the home painting process and after the work is performed.  One of the many aspects of an exterior painting project that should never be rushed is the color choice. Many times I have worked with homeowners who wait until the last minute to decide on the color and are surprised by how difficult this decision is.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing an exterior color.  First, don’t base your final decision on that little color deck sample card.  Put the actual paint color on the and look at it in different lighting conditions.  Also, make sure the sheen you are using matches the sheen of product line you choose.  A flat will look like a different color than a satin sheen.  Think about your color choice for at least 24 hours before having your contractor run off to the paint store and buy 20 gallons of custom tinted paint. Make sure the color choice fits with the neighborhood.   Certain neighborhood associations prohibit tenants from moving away from specified color schemes. Your neighbors will appreciate a well thought out and respectful choice.

Period appropriate color schemes are important on older classical homes.. Find a book with photos of the period and style of home you have and make an honest attempt at choosing a similar color. Where the paint cuts are met and how the trim and architectural details are colored should also be closely replicated based on historical photos. Modern style houses can be a wild card and if you have this type of house feel free to cut loose and be creative. Color changes in the right areas can hide certain undesirable architectural elements and highlight other positive details of your home. a quality House painter or designer will be able to offer opinions on this but remember that although perhaps a professionals opinion is more educated is still always boils down to an opinion.

One of my personal opinions is that In the Seattle area we have so much green that I try and steer clients away from choosing darker green colors.  It is nice to have a contrast with all the green trees and grass.  Just an opinion! I had a client once that wanted her house to exactly match the color of her car.  That was interesting. I would prefer to compliment the colors in my homes surrounding areas rather than match them. Color choice regret is a hard thing to overcome and therefore should be well thought out.  This is a decision made in a couple of days and will last for 10 years or more!

If you are finding it difficult to find an exact color to suite your needs you can always start will the base color and ask the color mixers at the paint store to add a little of the shade you have in mind and go from there. If you need to go this route make sure to order plenty of extra paint because matching any additional orders will almost always result in a slightly different shade. I hope these simple tips will help you will your house painting project and keep you happy and content will your decisions for years to come.

Exterior House Painting Tips

Exterior House Painting Tips

If you are going to take on the task of painting your house this summer or fall here are a few exterior house painting tips you can use.

Painting Tip # 1

Make sure the surface to be painted is free of surface contamination including all ground in dirt, mildew and surface salts.  If you have smooth a sponge and a TSP solution with proper dilution will work great. If your is rough cut cedar a pressure washer will be needed.   Do not try and remove paint with a high PSI pressure washer.  The goal of the pressure washer is to get the surface clean not remove paint.  More damage and moisture problems can be done with a pressure washer if you are not aware of how to use one properly.

Painting Tip #2

Use a carbide blade scraper and a sharp 5 in one tool blade to remove all loose coatings.  Scaly and flaky paint can be removed by pulling the scraper over the surface but the edges will be removed by wedging in the 5 in 1 under the first layer until it absolutely refuses to come off.  Sand the bare wood with 80 grit sandpaper and smooth out the paint voids and edges to help blend.  Do not use exterior Spackle.  It will crack.
